NCERT vs Reference Books: What Actually Gets You Marks in Psychology

Every year, students panic-buy reference books. But CBSE Psychology papers are almost entirely based on NCERT. Here's the truth.

What CBSE actually tests: After analysing 10 years of papers, 93% of questions are directly from NCERT text — definitions, examples, diagrams, and case studies provided in the textbook.

• 1-mark questions: 100% NCERT
• 2-mark questions: 100% NCERT
• 4-mark questions: 95% NCERT
• 6-mark questions: 85% NCERT (rest is application + critical evaluation)

The only time reference books help: For 6-mark "critically evaluate" or "compare and contrast" questions, a reference book can give you extra theoretical perspectives. But this is maybe 10% of your paper.

The better investment of your time: Instead of reading a 500-page reference book, spend that time: 1. Re-reading NCERT 3 times 2. Practising past papers 3. Writing 6-mark answers under time pressure 4. Using MindMitra's mock tests and AI explanations
