The concept of self is one of the most philosophically rich topics in NCERT Psychology.
What is Self? The self is the totality of an individual's conscious experiences, ideas, thoughts, and feelings with regard to herself or himself.
Components of Self: 1. Real self: Who you actually are 2. Ideal self: Who you want to be 3. Social self: How others see you
Self-Concept: The mental image you have of yourself — includes self-image, self-esteem, and ideal self.
Self-Esteem: The evaluative component of self-concept — how much you value yourself. High self-esteem → better mental health, resilience. Low self-esteem → anxiety, depression risk.
Erikson's Identity Crisis: Adolescence is a period of identity vs. role confusion (Stage 5). Teenagers explore different roles before committing to an identity.
- *Independent self-concept* (Western/individualist cultures): "I am unique, autonomous"
- *Interdependent self-concept* (Eastern/collectivist cultures like India): "I am part of my family and community"
Exam Tip: CBSE often asks "How does culture influence self-concept?" — use the independent vs. interdependent framework.
