Sensation and Perception are both covered in Chapter 5 (Sensory, Attentional and Perceptual Processes) of Class 11 NCERT.
Sensation: The process by which stimulation of a sensory organ leads to neural impulses that result in an experience. It's the raw data collected by your sense organs.
Perception: The process by which an individual gives meaning to the sensory data — it's interpretation guided by past experiences, attention, and context.
Simple Example: You see a shape on the road at night (sensation). Your brain says "that's a pothole" (perception).
Gestalt Principles of Perception (frequently asked!): 1. Figure-Ground: We perceive objects (figure) against a background (ground) 2. Proximity: Objects close together are seen as a group 3. Similarity: Similar objects are grouped together 4. Closure: We complete incomplete figures 5. Continuity: We perceive smooth, continuous patterns
Perceptual Constancy: We perceive objects as stable even when sensation changes — size constancy (a car looks the same size even far away), colour constancy.
Board Tip: A 4-mark question on Gestalt principles expects at least 2 principles with diagrams.
